Is the Northern Circuit worth the extra money and time?

If summit success and solitude are your priorities — absolutely yes. 98–99% success on Diamond is unmatched.

Days 1–3 have a few Lemosho groups. Days 4–7 you will probably see fewer than 5–10 other climbers total.

Can I overnight inside the crater?

Yes — Diamond tier only (+$1,200–1,500 pp). One of the rarest experiences in African trekking.

Are there animals on the northern side?

Yes — eland, buffalo signs, klipspringer, and lots of rare high-altitude birds.

Same summit temps as every route (-10 to -20°C). Nights at Mawenzi Tarn can be very cold & windy.

The ultimate Kilimanjaro experience. This 360° loop via the remote northern slopes is the longest established route (85–95 km). It offers maximum acclimatization (8 days on the mountain) and almost no crowds after Day 3. Widely regarded as the most beautiful and peaceful traverse of the entire mountain.

Day 01 :

Marangu Gate (1,860 m) → Mandara Hut (2,700 m)

Distance: 8 km | 4–5 hrs | Habitat: Rainforest Short transfer from Moshi (1 hr). Register, start walking through lush forest – monkeys & birds. Arrive Mandara Hut (A-frame wooden huts), dinner served in communal dining hall.

Day 02 :

Mandara Hut (2,700 m) → Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Distance: 12 km | 6–8 hrs | Habitat: Heathland → Moorland Steady climb out of forest into giant heather zone, then open moorland. First clear views of Kibo & Mawenzi peaks. Arrive Horombo – largest hut complex.

Day 03 :

Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Rest & active acclimatization. Optional hike to Zebra Rocks (4,050 m) or Mawenzi Ridge. Essential day – dramatically improves summit chances on this fast route.

Day 04 :

Horombo Hut (3,720 m) → Kibo Hut (4,720 m)

Distance: 10 km | 6–7 hrs | Habitat: Alpine desert Cross “The Saddle” – barren lunar landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive Kibo Hut early afternoon. Summit briefing, early dinner, sleep by 19:00.

Day 05 :

Summit Day! Kibo Hut (4,720 m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) → Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Distance: 6 km up + 16 km down | 11–15 hrs total
Midnight start → Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) at sunrise → Uhuru Peak along crater rim.
Descend all the way back to Horombo for hot meal and proper sleep (huge advantage over other routes).

Day 06 :

Horombo Hut (3,720 m) → Marangu Gate (1,860 m) → Transfer

Distance: 20 km | 5–7 hrs | Easy downhill through forest Receive official summit certificate (green for Uhuru, gold for Gilman’s). Celebration lunch at gate, transfer back to Moshi/Arusha (arrive ~14:00–16:00).
